LIVIN THE UGANDA LIFE

WOW this week has been crazy we have been trying to get an eye camp ready, we had an aids festival which was so fun we did aids testing and only one out of every 100 people was positive! then they had our group do an african dance for them... lets just say i can not shake my butt like they can! we were a pretty funny sight to see. On saturday night 8 of us went to jinja to an orphanage to have a sleepover with the kids it was so much fun megan brought marshmallows and we made smores. after we watched Aladdin on carries laptop the kids loved it! probably the best weekend i have had! On sunday we rode to church and met up with our group. The coolest thing was that we got our guard and a member of the youth outreach mission(a partner organization) to come with us it was a really cool experience. after church the missionaries came and talked to them we gave them a book of Mormon. later that light godfrey called us wanting to know more about the church and how old you have to be to get baptized. it was a really neat. we are hoping he comes back to church with us next week.
Now on to a serious note I am sure most of you know there was a terrorist attack in Kampala don't worry our group is ok! we couldn't leave our house all day yesterday but we would rather be safe then sorry.. which ment that our eye camp happened but we were unable to attend. we were a little upset but today they let six volunteers head out there. Other then that i love it here i love the people and the food(sometimes)I can't wait to see every one!

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

This past week was really good! On Wednesday we went to the local hospital. Ces and I were able to scrub into another surgery! I couldn't believe it the lady was having a hernia repair and she was wide awake during the whole thing she told the doctor she could feel him moving around fixing the hernia! I felt so bad for her!!!! But it was really cool to watch the surgery and see how they do the surgery! Before the surgery we went to the pediatric ward and played with the kids that were sick. I colored with a little boy named Trevor who had a inguinal hernia. He was so happy that someone was playing with him.
Megan and i went to the soccer field later that day and taught the soccer team who are all orphans about dental hygiene it was really cool. I can't remember what else i really did this week expect ces and i taught our guard how to play nerts best night playing cards!
About every day we go to a womens group or school they are so happy we are there so they have us introduce ourselves. We have to talk for at least three minutes! lets just say i am pretty good and winging it with the public speaking!!!!!
Saturday was awesome we got a small group together and went to the source of the NILE SO cool we had a little boat ride out to the spot. Then we went to Jinja and ATE INDIAN FOOD SO DELICIOUS!! the most relaxing day ever.
Sunday we went to church and i now understand what the churches were like that my brothers were serving in. The members here are so cool. I loved fast and testimony meeting IT wasn't just a time to tell stories, these people have such hard lives and still manage to come to church. I am also so grateful we have churches so close to us because we have to drive for at least an hour to get to church and its kind of an expensive ride too.The members/missionaries had us do everything! teach the lessons give talks sing play the piano.. and we make up more then half the ward!
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!!
I had the best fourth of July Our group went to Kampala to the US Embassy. I didn't realize how many whites live here. there were about 300 people there. we had an AMERICAN meal dancing singing and FIREWORKS! SO COOL
This week Some of us went to a small village and started building a mushroom house they are hard to make especially when you don't have all the equipment you need. The thing that was the craziest for me was that they didn't use any cement they had us grab rocks to fill in the holes... I hope it stays together!!!
Well i can't remember anything else right now but i MISS EVERY ONE AND HOPE everyone is doing great! LAURA please email me!!!

SAFARI ANYONE!

This week was really good we went to the hospital and interviewed the nurses about HIV/AIDS. it was really interesting to hear what they thought. Paige and I went with Wilson a local to peoples houses and interviewed them about being HIV positive there stories were so cool we also had a camera crew come with us to film their stories. while we were interviewing one lady she let us hold her baby who was six months old and i bet she only weighed 5 pounds it was so sad she was so malnurished. It was so sad to hear their stories I am so grateful for the standards that i grew up with and knowing what i should and shouldn't do.
Later on friday we went to a secondary school and taught about HIV and AIDS and how to prevent yourself from getting it. That was really fun although i don't do well talking infront of others I enjoyed it. FRIDAY NIGHT WE WENT ON OUR SAFARI!!!!! it was so much fun!!!! It took four hours to get there but was so worth it we saw baboons elephants lions antelope cob giraffe alligators hippos and a ton of different birds. There is this fly called the tsetse fly and they follow your car and when you slow down they come in and bite you and our driver said they give you the sleeping disease... but they hurt when they bite!!! and when you stop the car you have to sit in the car for two minutes until they leave then you can get out and they wont bug you so crazy!!
Well the safari was so fun we had a boat cruise up the nile and the other part of the day we were in the car driving to where the animals were. on the third day we went rhino tracking and got about fifteen feet away from the rhinos.the baby rhino was pretty new and i bet you can't guess what they named it... OBAMA!!!!
MOM I just wanted to tell you that i ate a banana string beans egg plant, and fish. I liked everything except the banana! they are still gross!
I am so grateful for a washer dryer and running water! although taking bucket showers arn't so bad and hand washing clothes is hard i can't wait until i have those modern conviencies back!! Well until next week
WEBALA!!!

Thanks every one for commenting its so nice to hear from every one! Marie i want you to spill the beans please you can email me too o and tell Dan i say HI!
Well i really am coming home with an accent the people hear can't understand our utah accent so we have to talk like the british which is actually fun! well yesterday i went with the mokono team to their eye camp and was able to scrub into the surgeries it was so cool and so unsterile!!!! I was helping this doctor from kampala which is the capitol of Uganda! he was so nice and taught me a lot about the eye. apparently he is a teaching doctor as well he was a really good teacher.I loved how happy the patients were after they had their surgeries some of them started to cry! i wanted to go back today to see their faces when we take off the bandages but we all had to switch off days! but our team is having our eye camp in JULY which i am so excited for!

Today we went to the hospital and interviewed all the patients that have HIV/AIDS it was so sad to hear all their stories because most of them their partners were unfaithful and gave them the disease then divorced them one lady almost had us in tears. So far i am loving the people and I LOVE THE FOOD! although we do have rice and beans with every meal its still delicious! Our cooks are awesome they are going to let Alex and I teach them how to make some simple american food which we are super excited for! Well i have to go but thanks again for all the comments they are awesome!!

Every one that finds out that were froom the USA asks about OBAMA and how he is doing people here love him it is so funny i love it! every one has pictures of the obama family its hilarious.
This week was so fun we went to a school out in NAJJA to build a adobe stove which was so fun all the kids came to help us build it. the best was stomping the clay with our bare feet! on our way home from the school the muffler fell off the car so the driver got out grabbed a strip off the trunk of the banana tree tied it to the muffler and we were on our way! who would have thought you could fix a muffler so easily! the taxi drivers are crazy here they go at least 60 on a dirt road passing all other cars or bodas(motercycles) on the road and if they go in the ditch they don't care! they also squish as many people in them as possible! we had 23 people two kids two chickens and three 30 lb bags of food in our taxi that is only suppose to seat 12 people! so scary especially on a dirt road! also you have to be careful because one of the chickens bit one of our team members it was actually really funny though!
On wednesday we ran into a group of docs and dentist who asked if we would be willing to help them. So jessie kim and i went. I was with the doctors helping them with procedures and checkups it was so awesome and made me appriciate everything i have ezpecially the medical care!

yesterday we went and watched the brasil ivory coast game which was awesome all the africans were cheering for Brasil which was really funny james you would have been happy it was fun to see how into the games they got and how drunk they got as well!
Thinks i am grateful for... my BED!!!! a microwave!!! NO hard bread and peanut butter for breakfast every morning it gets old really fast! a hot shower, no mice running around your house and no cockroaches in the fridge!

I AM HERE!

Well i finally made it here to Uganda after have a few troubles on the way over! i almost missed my flight from san francisco to london i was running through the airport(i'm sure i looked really funny) mom you were right every one way very helpful and friendly! well in london i was informed that my bags were lost so i had to go back and forth between terminals to finally get my bags to the right place! it took four hours to do so! but another man traveling to paris had the same problem! lets just say that i now know my way round the heathrow airport! On my flight to kenya i talked to a guy going to the world cup and while we were on the plane the UK vs US game was going to we were making bets on who would win.. it was a tie! After the flight he was really nice and walked me to the next plane i was suppose to get on nicest guy ever! I didn't meet up with anyone from our group until my flight to UGANDA!!
I made it here safe and sound with NO BAGS i should have know that was going to happen! every one is so nice and letting me use all their stuff. I LOVE IT HERE! it reminds me of Thailand but not as hot and a lot more dirty! when we throw the garbage out we jsut throw it in the streets WEIRD and then they come by and burn it! we have cooks that make our dinner which is delicious but we eat a lot of bananas so sick i can't believe i am eating them! we also have a guard his name is morris he is funny!
Today was my first day out on the streets so megan and i went up the the Kampaula hospital to a physical therapy clinic and worked there for the morning. Mom you would not believe how many kids have drop foot its crazy! the lady grace who runs it says she will never take her kids to a clinic for shots or anything else because of the problems that arise from it. I noticed you have to have a little british accent in order to communicate with the people i have a feeling i am coming home with an accent!
I love it here though it is so green and every one is so friendly the little kids always coming running up holding our hands saying mzungu( white person) they are so cute though! \i am sharing a room with seven other girls it is way fun and our room is the garage never would have thought i would be sleeping in a garage but i love it its actually better then the rooms in the house. Well mom i am sorry you weren't there to answer when i called but it was nice to talk to James! Sorry if my spelling sucks but these keys are sticking really bad!!!!!
Dad and Mom i just wanted to say thanks for letting me come and do this i am loving it here! o and i just found out my bags came but i don't get to get them until Wednesday because we are so far away from the airport! I LOVE six day old clothes!

When i called a lady that didn't speak ANY English answered the phone i knew right away that this was going to be interesting! after a ten minute conversation and her yelling at me twice i realized i was never going to know the answer to my question. so i thanked her and hung up. I'm just hoping that i get two checked bags. I can't wait to go although i will miss everyone! well the next time i write on this i will be in the "Pearl of Africa". don't worry mom i will write on here just for you! SEE YA IN SIX WEEKS!!!!

Well this is my first time writing on here and i have no idea what the crap i am doing! My friend Marie told me that she is the master at blogging and that she will help me. I am still waiting for that moment to come. (high pitch) MARIE HELP ME PLEASE!!!
Well as you guessed my reading the title i am about to embark on an adventure to UGANDA!! WOOT WOOT i can't wait. I decided to start a blog because i know my parents AKA mom will freak out if she doesn't have some sort of communication with me. Me on the other hand can and might not write the whole time i am there. Sorry mom if this upsets you!
I am heading over to Uganda having only been on one other flight in my LIFE ya you heard me right ONCE! and that was to Thailand with my sister. We went with another humanitarian group called YOUTHLINC! check them out they are awesome and i would go with them in a heart beat. But this time my sister suggested i go with HELP International so i asked my friends if they would want to go with me they said YES with out skipping a beat! i was so excited. We all applied back in October and can you believe it they are already over there. I have to wait because my only sister is getting married this month. So i have to fly to Africa all by my self ( I AM FREAKING OUT JUST A LITTLE BIT) I am staying over there for six weeks I can't wait to see every thing my three other friends are talking about! I know i am going to fall in love with the Ugandan people the way I fell in love with the Thai people! so excited!
